Sam Thompson details recovery from throat surgery as he's on vocal rest

Sam Thompson has shared an update after having surgery on his throat.

The former Made in Chelsea star and TV presenter, 33, underwent surgery to remove a cyst on his vocal cords.

And he’s updated his 2.8 million followers on how he’s doing after the procedure, saying he’s tired of vocal rest.

“Day 1 of no speaking... I am so bored,” Thompson shared, alongside a selfie, “although I am LOVING all the cat memes you are sending.”

He also shared a video from hospital from Tuesday before the procedure: “I’m having vocal cord surgery – this has been in the diary for a while, I had a cyst on my vocal cords.

“It’s because I talk to much and shout too loudly and I keep losing my voice really easily.

“So yeah they are cutting it out, they are putting me to sleep, I’ve never been put to sleep before.

“I’m a bit nervous, I don’t like not being in control.”

The star announced he would be having the surgery last month.

“I’ve got a cyst on my vocal cords,” he said, on his podcast Staying Relevant, which he hosts with his friend Pete Wicks.

“I’m having that taken out, which is going to be mad because it means I have three days of vocal rest.”

Benign vocal cord cysts develop when mucus-producing glands in the throat become blocked, which can lead to voice strain and hoarseness.

They often occur in people who use their voice for their career, such as singers, professional speakers and broadcasters

He said he had been advised to stay silent for three days after the surgery to make sure the vocal cords can properly repair.

According to NHS advice from London-based hospital Guy’s and St Thomas’, they state: “For the first three days after the operation, we recommend that you do not speak or use your voice at all.

“This is to allow healing time for the surface of your vocal cord or cords around the site of the surgery.”

Speaking to the Standard last year, Thompson - who recently confirmed his relationship with Talitha Balinska - revealed his New Year’s resolution is to spend more time with his loved ones.

“It’s been amazing, but not every year is going to be like this,” he said.

“I haven’t had a week off and I really want to spend more time with my family, especially my nephew, because he’s grown up so quickly.”
