Sam Kerr's Chelsea beat PSG 1-0 in Champions League, after Caitlin Foord's double sees Arsenal to 5-1 drubbing of Lyon

Sam Kerr's Chelsea side has won its first Champions League game, while an England legend hailed Caitlin Foord's role in Arsenal's drubbing of Lyon.

The Blues beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0, despite the London-based side only having 39 per cent of the ball.

However, they made better use of it, with 15 shots on goal, four of them on target, and forcing six corners, as opposed to PSG's six, one and one.

One of those on-target efforts came from Kerr in the 11th minute, when she controlled a cross neatly around her defender and followed up with a low left-foot strike that was blocked by goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi.

However, the PSG shot-stopper could do little to keep out Millie Bright at the back post 15 minutes later.

Erin Cuthbert's corner was cleared by PSG, but she reloaded with a second, better cross over the top of the goal mouth traffic, finding defender Bright, who volleyed in from close range.

From there it was a matter of hanging on until the final whistle.

The Blues now sit second in Group A, behind Real Madrid, after their 2-0 win over Chelsea's next opponent, Albanian side KS Vllaznia Shkodër.

Foord sparks Gunners to shock drubbing of reigning champions

A day earlier, Matildas star Caitlin Foord scored twice as Arsenal shredded reigning European champions Lyon, who have won six of the seven Women's Champions league titles up for grabs.

It was the French maestros' worst defeat in 17 years as they conceded five goals in a match for the first time since 2005.

The world's top women's side may have been weakened by a host of injuries, including to Foord's fellow Australian, Ellie Carpenter, who has been out of action since rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament in last season's final, but it still felt a seismic result.

Nobody seemed to enjoy it more than the woman from Shellharbour, who has made a striking start to the season for Women's Super League challengers, while also slipping seamlessly back into international action with Australia, having scored three against South Africa and Denmark recently.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright watched her two goals with delight, praising the Australian as one of the side's best players.

Foord attributed her terrific start to the season to feeling refreshed, having enjoyed an extended break back home last Christmas, and learning to enjoy her game in a more relaxed fashion.

"I'm honestly just really enjoying myself, I play my best football when I am having fun, I love walking out onto the pitch with these girls," she said.

"I love being here and I love joining up with my national team as well."

It was a far cry from last season, when Arsenal began their European campaign with a 4-0 loss to then-champions Barcelona, a defeat Foord said the side had learned a lot from.

However, she knows there is still plenty of work to do in a tough Group C, which features FC Zürich Frauen and a constantly improving Juventus outfit managed by Joe Montemurro, who had previously enjoyed a successful reign at the London club.
