Scots actor Sam Heughan has opened up about his personal life in a new book.
The Outlander star was inspired to write Waypoints while taking part in the West Highland Way, a 96-mile hike from Milngavie to Fort William.
Appearing in Friday's episode of BBC's The One Show, he took fans back on the trail with him in a short video and shared some key moments that made him reflect on his life and journey so far.
Sam took part in the West Highland Way last year, during a break in filming for Outlander.
And if the 96-mile journey didn't sound daunting enough, he also decided he would take on Ben Nevis on the way - Scotland's tallest mountain.
In the video, which showed off the beautiful Scottish landscape and rolling hills, he explained: " The walk gave me time to reflect on my own personal journey and I wrote a book about the experience."
He didn't get his challenge off to the best start. After just two days, he felt he'd "maybe set his goals too high" as he was carrying so much equipment. He even joked: " I started the walk with maybe a large ego, thinking i was reasonably fit and I had all the gear."
But after a shaky start, he was able to get into the swing of it and decided he was going to walk the full trail in just five days - which is an average of about 20 miles a day.
The serenity of the stunning landscape gave Sam the chance to think about his past.
He said: "The tranquil nature of this place allows me to reflect on my life. I have few memories of my dad, he left when I was 18 months old. I didn’t reconnect with him properly until I was an adult.
"It was an experience of meeting my dad when he was close to dying and it was very personal for me. But the book is quite cathartic, maybe it’s putting some things to rest."
This chance to be alone and reflect had "such a lasting impression" on Sam that he brought along his friend John to join him for part of the walk again.
The pair have worked together for nearly 10 years, with John training Sam for Outlander so that he would have the "physique of a warrior".
And when John asked jokingly if this was Sam's form of "payback" for years of gruelling training, he admitted: "Slightly, yes - all those burpees you kept giving me!"
It wasn't all plain sailing for Sam whilst he was on his journey. He recounted one night in particular where he was "at his lowest", and was considering giving up.
But he continued: "But one man got me through it. I met him on my walk and it changed everything."
Fellow hiker Graham formed a quick friendship with Sam, joining him once again to be in the short film.
He said: "We helped each other through, we really did."
Sam's book Waypoints: My Scottish Journey is available to buy from October 25.
