Sam Fender tells Lorraine Kelly why he turned down chance to be Ariana Grande's 'boyfriend'

Sam Fender has revealed to Lorraine Kelly why he once turned down Ariana Grande, after being invited to play the world famous singer's boyfriend in one of her music videos.

As voting launches for this year's Brit Awards, with Sam up for three accolades, the North Shields singer appeared on the ITV show to reflect on what an amazing year he's had, talking about everything from going fishing with Robson Green to getting Time and Line of Duty star Stephen Graham to appear in the video for his song Spit of You.

And that's on top of Sam's second album Seventeen Going Under outselling the rest of the top 10 combined as it shot straight to number 1 in the autumn and him packing out countless venues, including Newcastle's Utilita Arena, on his tour at the end of the year.

Sam spoke to Lorraine about the close friendship he has forged with Elton John, even performing alongside the music legend at an Oscars party an it was then that she put him on the spot about 'knocking back' Thank U Next singer Ariana.

Lorraine asked Sam: "Are you going to work with Ariana Grande or has that ship sailed do you think? Did it not just quite work out?"

Sam replied: "It's a strange story. We got offered to play the boy in this music video at the time.

"It was ages ago, it was before we'd even really released anything. We were doing a music video at the time in America and it was like 'do we just run over to this set and be in this other video with Ariana Grande?'

"It was one of those things, it was quite overwhelming."

Lorraine told him: "Do you know what? Maybe it'll come back again," to which Sam added: "It was one of those things where I was worried I'd just be known as the kid that was in the Ariana Grande video."

Wrapping things up, Lorraine told Sam: "You're a wise, wise man."
