Sam Fender storms Glastonbury and does Newcastle proud with epic debut performance

Sam Fender had yet another pinch me moment in his already epic music career when he played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury at Friday night.

Since winning the Brits Critics Choice award at 2019, Sam’s star had soared across the world, seeing him and his band play to packed audiences across the globe, as well as a string of sell out gigs on home turf, including two capacity shows over consecutive nights at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena earlier this year.

But, but before this weekend, there was one big stage that had evaded them - Glastonbury. North Shields music juggernaut Sam was all set play the world famous event back in 2019, before pulling out due to illness.

Glastonbury itself had been left in the shadows since then, before making at a barnstorming return for 2022 over the last few days. And, after the Glasto punters had been entertained by the likes of The Libertines, Mel C and Supergrass earlier on in the day, Sam and the lads took to the Pyramid Stage at 8.15pm.

After opening with the rousing double header of Will We Talk and Getting Started. Sam took the time to tell his large and captive audience just what being at Glastonbury meant to all of them. He said: “Oh my f**king word Glastonbury, how we doing? Me and the boys have never been here before; we’ve never been here as punters, we’ve never played here and we’re doing that all in one day, which is the most f**king crazy experience.”

There were more than a few black and white flags and NUFC tops in the crowd as Sam delivered a storming set which also included The Borders, featuring some top notch sax playing from the legend in his own right, Johnny Bluehat.

Sam then invited fans to “do some mosh pits,” but “look after each other,” as the band launched into Spice and Howden Aldi Death Queue as flames shots up into the air and chants of “Shearer, Shearer,” could be heard as the latter came to an end.

Seventeen Going Under at sundown was a real moment as was the spine-tingling The Dying Light, which Sam dedicated to Newcastle after asking if any Geordies were in the crowd.

The “woah oh oh ohs” of Hypersonic Missiles' anthemic crescendo saw the crowd bathe Sam and his band in the Glasto glory they so richly deserved.

As well as the Glasto faithful eating up all of Sam’s set, there was a LOT of love for him on Twitter.

One fan posted: “ Sam Fender should be headlining the pyramid stage this is epic,” with another tweeting: “ Bravo @samfendermusic. Loving the black and white takeover of the Pyramid Stage at @glastonbury”
