Sam Altman thinks ChatGPT’s energy usage is nothing to worry about, but is he right?

Open AI CEO Sam Altman speaks during a talk session with SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son at an event titled "Transforming Business through AI" in Tokyo, Japan, on February 03, 2025. SoftBank and OpenAI announced that they have agreed a partnership to set up a joint venture for artificial intelligence services in Japan today.

  • Sam Altman says a ChatGPT prompt uses "0.34 watt-hours" of electricity, roughly one second of an oven
  • He also says a single ChatGPT prompt uses "0.000085 gallons of water; roughly one-fifteenth of a teaspoon"
  • While that's not a lot in isolation, ChatGPT has over 400 million weekly users, with multiple prompts per day
