Sam Allardyce has admitted he ‘never got over’ Alisson’s last-minute winner against his West Brom side - boasting that he has an otherwise good record against the ‘fantastic’ Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds goalkeeper sealed a memorable 2-1 victory back in May 2021, glancing home a 95th-minute corner with a deft header at an empty Hawthorns. That infamous win in the Midlands helped Klopp’s side snatch an unlikely Champions League place after a season torn apart by defensive injuries.
Liverpool boss Klopp has only won three of his eight meetings with Allardyce, drawing four and losing once - a 2-1 defeat at Anfield thanks to a Christian Benteke brace for Crystal Palace. But while the former Everton manager boasted an impressive record against his German counterpart, he admitted that a ‘fantastic’ Klopp is among the best in the world - and that he still hasn’t got over that Alisson winner.

“We have the best in the world don’t we? That’s what I think,” Allardyce told Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast when asked about Premier League managers. “The best in the world want to try the Premier League. You’re pitting your wits against the best in the world. I have a good record against Jurgen except for the last 30 seconds at West Brom when the goalie scored. I never got over that one, but yeah I’ve done well but he’s a fantastic manager at a fantastic football club now.”
Liverpool emphatically bounced back from that surprise defeat at Anfield to go 68 home games unbeaten - a run that stretched nearly four years before ending against Burnley in January 2021. Alisson’s goal propelled the Reds into the 2021/2022 Champions League where they were beaten in the final in Paris against Real Madrid.
