On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers worked out five players—including quarterbacks Kellen Mond and Bryce Perkins. Well, now we know why.
As first reported by Field Yates of ESPN, the Panthers have lost quarterback Jake Luton to the New Orleans Saints. The NFC South rivals are bringing back the 6-foot-6, 224-pound passer to their locker room, signing him off Carolina’s practice squad.
Buy Panthers TicketsA 2020 sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Luton has appeared in three games during his pro career—all of which came during his rookie campaign. He completed 60 of his 110 passing attempts for 624 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions over a trio of starts.
Luton spent the 2022 season in New Orleans between the practice squad and active roster. After being waived by the Saints on May 2, 2023, he signed on with the Panthers for the summer.
With starter Bryce Young having been ruled out in Week 3, Carolina elevated Luton off their practice squad this past weekend to back up Andy Dalton.
