Saints’ Derek Carr In Concussion Protocol for Second Time This Season

Saints quarterback Derek Carr has endured a rough season in terms of injuries.

The veteran quarterback was hit hard on multiple plays during Sunday’s 33–28 loss to the visiting Lions, and one particular hit by Detroit defensive end Bruce Irvin caused Carr to remain on the ground and receive medical attention. He exited the game and didn’t return.

New Orleans coach Dennis Allen announced Monday that Carr is in concussion protocol for the second time in the past month. He also is being evaluated for rib injury. Carr’s shoulder, which he originally injured in Week 3, then re-aggravated in Week 10, that seems to be O.K. for now, Allen said.

Carr was taken out of his team’s game against the Vikings on Nov. 12 and diagnosed with a concussion. Following Sunday’s early exit, Carr has now been taken out of a game early three times this season due to injuries.

After the Week 10 game, Carr was able to recover over the Saints’ bye week. At the time, the quarterback was frustrated with the seemingly continuous injuries.

“I have never been hurt this much in my life in one season,” Carr said ahead of Week 12, via ESPN. “So if I’m honest … it’s been a little frustrating.”

Jameis Winston replaced Carr in Sunday’s game and is the likely starter until Carr can return. The Saints (5–7) play host to the Panthers (1–11) Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
