Safiyya Vorajee says Azaylia was 'ready for heaven' as she talks bond with ex Ashley

Safiyya Vorajee has revealed she still has a "strong" bond with ex Ashley Cain despite their recent split.

The couple decided to call time on their relationship just weeks before the one year anniversary of the death of their daughter Azaylia.

Appearing on Wednesday's edition of Lorraine, Safiyya spoke about her beautiful daughter and the final days of her life.

Little Azaylia passed away in April 2021 after battling leukaemia for many months of her life.

Speaking about the day that Azaylia left them, Safiyya told Lorraine Kelly: "I woke up in the morning and I went downstairs and I said, 'I feel like today is the day'.

"I looked at Azaylia and she looked tired, she looked like she was ready to go to heaven. And I felt like as a mother I knew that instantly when I woke up in that morning."

Safiyya also said that although she’s no longer with Ashley after their split last month, they’re still united and working closely to honour their little girl - and says the foundation saved their lives.

"We will always honour Azaylia, and mine and Ashley’s friendship is so strong together - we’re really good," she said, explaining how they climbed Scafell Pike together and how "it was so emotional when we got to the top - we were up there with Azaylia".

She added to Lorraine: "If it wasn’t for our foundation, we wouldn’t be here."

Safiyya also spoke about her new book, which is based on a diary she kept during her daughter's treatment: "I felt like it was my therapy to really pour my pain and my heart and my soul into each and every page and to show a journey of childhood cancer.

"When Azaylia grew up I wanted her to read her book to see how much of an inspiration she was, how many peoples lives she was changing and how many lives she changed, but unfortunately that wasn't the case.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV and ITV Hub.
