'Sad' - Nigel Clough in shock claim over Nottingham Forest fans after Derby County relegation

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Nigel Clough says Reds fans will miss Derby County following their relegation from the Championship because they "enjoy the rivalry".

The Rams were sent tumbling into League One on Bank Holiday Monday after their late defeat at QPR as Luke Amos' 88th-minute goal condemned them to the drop. Derby are now facing a huge summer of rebuilding with American businessman Chris Kirchner hoping to give the club a fresh start as he inches closer to a takeover following a tumultuous season on and off the pitch.

Plenty of Forest fans have enjoyed watching the Rams being relegated, but Mansfield boss Clough who has connections with both clubs feels that once the dust settles Reds supporters will miss their arch-rivals.

"It’s been contrasting fortunes between the East Midlands rivals," Clough told the Mansfield Chad. "At Forest, everything is bubbling along lovely for them.

“Every time they play something seems to happen. I don’t think at Luton they got the breaks but apart from that everything has gone for Forest, whilst at Derby, it’s been the opposite. It’s very sad and I think a lot of Forest fans will be sad to Derby go as they enjoy the rivalry.

“They’ll be gloating a bit at the minute but I don’t think it’s good for the East Midlands that they’ve gone out of the league.”

While Derby have dropped out of the Championship, it could still get worse for the Rams as the Reds are currently chasing promotion to the Premier League having had a super season under head coach Steve Cooper.
