A RYANAIR flight from Edinburgh Airport has been forced to divert just an hour into its four-hour journey following a mid-air medical emergency.
The Ryanair flight RK514 that was bound for Marrakesh took off from Edinburgh Airport at 7.22am on Sunday and was expected to land in Morocco at 11.15am.
However, it is understood that the captain of the Boeing 737-8AS had to divert the flight to Birmingham Airport after a passenger onboard became ill.
Ryanair confirmed to The National that the plane was met by paramedics upon landing at Birmingham Airport, and the passenger was offloaded for further treatment.
Their condition is currently unknown.
The flight was only around an hour into the journey when it had to make the emergency diversion and landed at the English airport at around 8.15am.
According to flight tracking data on Flight Radar 24, the Ryanair flight had just passed the bottom of England and was heading over the English Channel before it U-turned and headed back towards the mainland as it flew over Fowey, Davidstow and Marhamchurch in Cornwall.
Flight details then showed the plane looped around just outside Birmingham city centre, over Rubery, Redditch and Bromsgrove, before it made its descent to Birmingham Airport.
A Ryainair spokesperson said: "This flight from Edinburgh to Marrakesh (13 Sep) diverted to Birmingham after a passenger onboard became ill.
"The aircraft was met by paramedics upon landing at Birmingham Airport, and the passenger was offloaded for further treatment."
