Ryan Tubridy's mother to miss final Late Late Show after suffering a fall

Outgoing Late Late host Ryan Tubridy has shared a sweet on-air message for his mother after revealing she recently suffered a fall and will miss his final stint on the flagship RTE chat show.

Tubs sent his many a heartfelt message on his RTE radio show on Thursday morning and also thanked the staff and medical professionals taking care of his mum Catherine as she listens in.

He explained that she unfortunately won’t be there for his last episode hosting The Late Late Show and she will miss his 50th birthday celebrations with their family.

“She’s in great hands,” he said. “She’s going to miss my little birthday gathering with my family, but that’s okay.

“We’ll bring the cake into her. No candles, but I want to wish her well if you’re listening in this morning mum, which I know you are.

“I love you very much and I hope you’re doing okay because you’re more important than all these things.

“Sorry about bringing my family into the show this morning, but happy recovery is what I’m trying to say.

“She’s doing great and thank you to all the beautiful and wonderful people looking after her.”

Ryan recently shared that being in the spotlight played a part in his decision to step back from The Late Late Show.

“My life was lived in the glare of the limelight for 20 years so yes, that was one of the reasons,” he told the RTE Guide.

“I wanted to turn that light down. I just think I had my fill of being public property at that level.

“Now I’ve always accepted the fame thing was part and parcel of the job, but then you hit an age and think, ‘That was lovely, but I don’t want to play that game anymore.’

“Last summer, the seeds were sown in my head, but it got short circuited in the last few months. So no one thing, but a tapestry of events that helped to lead me to where I am today.”

He admitted that that leaving the programme, which he has fronted since 2009, will be “a difficult transition”.

“I think it’s time to concentrate on the love of people closer to me than the attention of those I don’t know,” Ryan added.

"My family has made sacrifices for this job and I’ll never be able to thank them enough for that. They are my be-all and end-all and it has always been family first and career second.

“I’m looking forward to hanging out with my daughters, who were girls when I first started this show and are now women. They are extraordinary young women who will kill me for talking about them so I will stop now.”
