Rutherglen fire seen for miles around as video captures blaze crews are still tackling

Videos of the ongoing fire at a building in Rutherglen show the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service battling the blaze as smoke can be seen from across the city.

Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fire, as Caledonia Avenue at Main Street and King Street at Farmeloan Road remain closed. The force have also said that Rutherglen Police Office will be closed to the public today as a result of the blaze.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 11.30pm on Thursday, 13 October, we were called to a report of a fire on King Street, Rutherglen.

“Officers attended to assist Scottish Fire and Rescue Service colleagues with local road closures. An evacuation of a number of properties was undertaken as a precaution.

“Caledonia Avenue at Main Street and King Street at Farmeloan Road remain closed. A joint investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fire.

“Rutherglen Police Office will be closed to the public today. Anyone looking to contact Police should attend their next nearest police office, or call us via 101.”

Glasgow Live previously reported how residents in the area have been urged to keep their doors and windows closed due to the extent of the smoke as emergency crews remain at the scene after the fire was initially reported just after 11pm last night. Nearby flats were also evacuated as a safety precaution.

The fire has been confirmed to be in a council building on King Street and witnesses have told Glasgow Live it is the Royal Burgh House ablaze and that 'the roof has collapsed in'.
