Rutherglen family living with 'river of faeces and used tampons' in garden

A mum-of-two has hit out at the sewage that's plagued her garden for nine months - leaving a trail of 'faeces' and 'used tampons' daily.

Louise Morgan-Smyth lives in Rutherglen with her husband John and their two girls Morven, 11, and Madeleine, 8, at Lochbrae Drive. The family first spotted sewage running through their garden in June, last year.

Now, they can only access their house via one entrance and despite Scottish Water coming out multiple times to fix the issue, they are still burdened by it, the Record reports.

Louise said: “Scottish Water don’t seem to be in any rush to do anything. It is terrible.

“I have faeces, used tampons and all sorts in our garden dripping down our steps and flowing right down to the bottom of the street, where there is now a massive puddle of god knows what collected there now.

“We are frightened to use the toilets because whatever we flush, we are scared will flow into our garden. It doesn’t stop, it is constantly flowing like a river.

“There is a nursery and a residential assisted living for elderly people on our street, so children and vulnerable people are trailing through this everyday. People and their dogs are all walking through this and taking it into their houses. Not everyone will know that it is not water.

“A neighbour came to our door this morning to tell us that we might’ve left the hose on, but it wasn’t. It was sewage.

“They have still not given us a date on when they will be fixing it. I think the issue is that, it’s a bigger job than they ever thought it would be.

“It is an absolute hazard to public health. I don’t know what their priorities are, but you would think that sh*t going down the street would be. There is no urgency from them to do anything about it.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We are aware of an ongoing issue at a property in Lochbrae Drive, Rutherglen which is causing waste water to spill into the garden.

“Plans are under way to carry out a repair to a collapsed sewer in the street, however, this is taking some time as road traffic management will be required due to the location and depth of the sewer. We have previously used a vactor to help relieve the waste water system and minimise any spills.

“This will continue until the repair can be actioned. We will also continue to carry out clean-ups of the area whenever there are any spills.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this is causing the householders and the local community, and would like to reassure them that we are doing what we can to expedite the repair.”
