A missile has hit an apartment building in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing one person, injuring at least three, and causing widespread damage.

Pictures from the scene show fire engulfing part of a residential building in the country's second most-populous city.

Regional Governor Oleh Synehubov said the strike took place in the city's central Kyiv district.

"Three people were slightly injured," he wrote on Telegram.

"Unfortunately, an elderly woman was killed.

"Her husband was nearby when the strike occurred and by a miracle suffered no serious injuries."

Mr Synehubov told local media rescue teams were searching for another missing elderly woman who could be under rubble left by the impact.

"The fourth floor has been destroyed. This is an old building," he was quoted as saying.

"We understand that the second and third floors were heavily damaged. The entire section of the building is no longer fit for habitation."

Anatoly Torianyk, deputy head of Kharkiv rescue services, said there was no indication of further casualties.

Kyiv has accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure throughout the war, with scores of Ukrainians killed and thousands more forced to flee their homes following similar strikes.

Early in the war, which is now entering its eleventh month, a Russian missiles struck an apartment building in Kyiv, killing two and injuring others, with dramatic footage capturing the moment the missile hit five floors of the high-rise.

In July another Russian missile struck an apartment building in Serhiivka, near Odesa, killing 19 residents.

Three months later another strike reduced a Zaporizhzhia residential block to rubble.

Only two weeks ago, 45 residents were killed after their apartment building in Dnipro was struck, marking the single-deadliest attack by Russia against civilians since autumn of 2022.
