The UK accused Vladimir Putin of “sabre rattling” after he said Russia was ready for war against Europe as he dug in against Donald Trump’s peace talks to end the war in Ukraine.

The Russian president appeared to be talking a hardball line on the peace discussions after Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky had voiced a “bit of optimism” that progress could be made.
