Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and German foreign minister Johann Wadephul met in New York on Saturday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, marking the first talks between the two countries’ foreign ministers since before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Relations between Moscow and Berlin have remained deeply strained since the invasion, with Germany emerging as a strong supporter of Ukraine. Tensions have also risen following an alleged drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany in August, which Berlin has blamed on Russia and Moscow has rejected.
