Runcorn Bridge closed in both directions as police issue warning

Runcorn Bridge was closed in both directions as police urge motorists to "avoid the area".

The A533 Silver Jubilee Bridge, otherwise known as Runcorn Bridge, was closed from the A558 Bridgewater Expressway (Runcorn) to Waterloo Road (Widnes).

According to traffic management system Inrix, the bridge was closed at around 5.12am on Saturday, June 4, and diversions were in place via the Mersey Gateway.

Cheshire Police said that the bridge had been closed in both directions due to concerns for the safety of a woman with motorists and pedestrians advised to "avoid the area at this time".

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "The Silver Jubilee Bridge in Widnes is currently closed in both directions due to concerns for the safety of a woman. Motorist and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area at this time. Diversions are in place via the Mersey Gateway."

At around 7:30am Cheshire Police confirmed that the Silver Jubilee Bridge had reopened in both directions. A police spokesperson said that the woman was "safe and well and will receive the support she needs."

There will be 159 road closures across Merseyside this weekend as people hold Jubilee street parties.

Celebrations kicked off the Queen's Platinum Jubilee on Thursday, June 2, with a number of roads closed the past two days for street celebrations.

The majority of these closures will take place today and tomorrow. Sefton Council announced earlier this week that it had a record number of applications for street parties as it welcomes the weekend where hundreds will take to the streets to celebrate.
