RTE star Ryan Tubridy called 'derogatory' names by teens on the street

Ryan Tubridy has described teenagers who hurled insults at him as a few “bad apples” on his radio show.

The host is gearing up for one of the busiest nights in his work schedule as the Late Late Toy Show airs this weekend. However, he said that an unsettling experience in recent days gave him food for thought on the Irish youth.

The 49-year-old did not reveal the exact nature of what was said, but described the encounter as “nasty” and said that the group filmed him on their mobile phones while dishing out verbal abuse. He added that the experience left him disappointed, as he normally has a positive outlook on young people in Ireland.

Ryan told RTE listeners: “I’m not sure why they did it but I presume it's part of their TikTok feed or something like that. I'm sharing that with you [the listener] because you're sharing stuff with me. You just have to keep an eye on it.”

He also took the opportunity to criticise young people’s use of social media following the incident. Ryan argued that young people need to show more kindness when uploading content to social platforms.

He continued: “The next generation needs to go easy, stop recording everything and don’t be mean. They’re terrific, I love them, but once or twice a bad apple falls far from the tree.”

However, he swiftly moved on from the negative discussion to talk about this year’s highly anticipated Late Late Toy Show. Ryan teased that the rehearsal for the show had already taken place, adding that the production could be “among the best” viewed in recent years.
