RTE spent almost €5,000 on 200 flip flops – but here’s how we could’ve saved the broadcaster thousands of euro instead.
The station’s accounts reveal their controversial Astus barter account was used to spend €4,956.73 on 200 pairs of Havaianas flip flops for agencies and clients during a summer party in 2016.
According to Havaianas website, their flip flops could set you back between €22 and €30 for a pair of the comfortable flat footwear.

But we can reveal a trip to Penney’s to buy 200 €8 moulded flip flops would’ve cost just €1,600 – saving the taxpayer €3,356.
For a further saving, Penney’s also stock €1.30 flip flops often seen being given out at weddings to help tired dancing feet.
If RTE bosses bought 200 of those, it would only cost €260 – giving us a mega saving of €4,696.
Accounts also show more than €2,000 on balloons for the summer party.
