RTE’s Ryan Tubridy poses with rarely seen mum as they mark special occasion

RTE star Ryan Tubridy has shared a rare picture of his mum Catherine in a touching tribute for Mother’s Day.

He took to Instagram on Sunday to post a selfie of the pair both smiling into the camera as they marked the special occasion.

Alongside the photo, the presenter used a simple caption, writing: “The mammy”.

The 49-year-old is usually very private about his family and rarely posts about them on his social media accounts, which are followed by hundreds of thousands of fans.

However he did make one exception in January when his beloved mum also appeared in an Instagram post posing for a picture with Ryan, his uncle David and cousin Sinead.

The Dubliner explained the reason why they met up, saying his cousin Sinead is making a documentary on their political family.

Ryan wrote: "Introducing my mum, Catherine, my uncle David and cousin Sinéad who brought us together yesterday to film us chatting about our great grandmother, Mary Coyle.

"It was a beautiful experience and I learnt many things I never knew before. It’s just for us as a family but I would highly recommend it as an exercise. All you need is a phone and an enthusiastic family member like Sinéad!"

It comes after Ryan made a shock announcement last week that he is stepping away from presenting The Late Late Show after 14 years in the role.

He explained in a statement: "It has been a privilege to host the national institution that is the Late Late Show for the last fourteen years. I want to thank the tremendous teams of producers, researchers, crew and executives who have done the hard work to keep the show on the road over the years. Many have become dear friends.

“Also, to the viewers, I am so grateful for the loyalty you have shown to the Late Late Show, week in, week out. Not only did you raise 30 million euros for Irish charities including over 15 million euros for children's charities all over the island that are particularly close to my heart, but you showed incredible generosity of spirit for which I am profoundly grateful. I was often touched by the kind comments of viewers stopping me on the street or at the supermarket on a Saturday to say 'thank you' or 'well done' for highlighting an issue that affected them or their families on the previous night's show. Go raibh maith agaibh.

“And finally, to my family who stood by me every day of every week, year in, year out. To my daughters especially, they put up with so much and I am as grateful to them as I am awestruck by them.

“I will continue on the radio show which I love and will talk about other projects in the future that will embrace my love of books, history and Ireland but that's for another day. For now, we have exciting plans for the remaining shows this season. Stay tuned!"

Ryan will present his final Late Late Show on Friday, May 29 and will continue to present his RTE radio show on weekday mornings.
