Royal fans 'work out' why Kate and William were 'late' for the Coronation

Millions of people tuned in to watch the King and Queen arrive at Westminster Abbey in their state coach yesterday to begin the Coronation service.

But when they entered the grounds, William, Kate, and their three children Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte and Prince George were nowhere to be seen.

The planned order of service issued by Buckingham Palace stated the Prince and Princess of Wales were supposed to arrive and be seated before Charles and Camilla.

But that didn't happen and instead the Wales family pulled up after the monarch, meaning the camera panned in to see the King and Queen rather awkwardly waiting for five minutes.

Keen royal fans have speculated whether William and Kate were in fact late for the Coronation, or if it was actually planned that way.

"Commentators said that William and Kate were late and Charles was not pleased," someone wrote on Twitter.

Cameras caught an aide discussing with a perplexed-looking Charles about the apparent delay - and one TikToker said it was like he was having a "hissy fit".

While another Twitter user said: "Prince William, Kate, and their two younger children were supposed to have arrived five minutes ahead of him, but instead they were a minute late; so he couldn't get out of the carriage until Prince William and Kate entered the building."

Given that George and Louis were tasked with holding Charles' robes as they walked into church, it's possible they were really on time.

But viewers have hypothesised many reasons why the royals may have had a timely blunder - from traffic to rows and outfit mishaps.

"I feel like William and Kate were literally stuck in traffic, video shows they were walking up after the King arrived," one person tweeted.

Though this is rather unlikely given the route to church was emptied for the Royal Family.

"Kate and William looked like they were fighting in the car... and, they were late," someone else speculated.

Another agreed there was "major 'fight in the car' energy from all four of them".

"Will and Kate looked miserable, tense and no smiles to be found," a third put.

Someone else joked that it was down to astrology, saying: "Best laid plans lol William and Kate are late!! #MercuryRetrograde."

Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter suspected that it was down to the couple's three young children.

"Louis is five, let's put it that way," she said, while a colleague in London said he saw the Wales' royal car "screaming by" with the family-of-five "clearly running late".

Another Twitter user agreed: "As a mother of a toddler with a strong personality I can appreciate why Kate and Will might be running late."

And a third said: "Wills and Kate blatantly running late because they've had a f***ing nightmare getting the kids ready. We've all been there."

While it remains unclear whether the family were actually running behind, it seems the majority of fans have put it down to their kids being kids.

Whatever their reason, the arrival was worth the wait when the Waleses stepped out - and it appeared the slight delay didn't put a dampener on the big day.
