Rouken Glen burn 'contaminated' by vandals now safe for dog walkers after clean-up

Dog walkers have been given the go-ahead to let their pooches in a burn after it was contaminated by sewage.

The water at Capelrig Burn which runs through the popular Rouken Glen Park was 'polluted' by a third party, leaving it giving off a 'putrid smell'. East Renfrewshire Council had urged the public to stay clear until it was cleared up.

Scottish Water confirmed that the smell was due to a sewer blockage that was caused by 'suspected vandalism'. Sewage was discharged into the burn leaving it out of bounds for the public.

It's now been confirmed that the clean-up operation was a success and a review is underway into the incident.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Suspected vandalism on our sewer network resulted in discharge into the Capelrig Burn, Newton Mearns recently. As soon as we cleared the blockage the sewer began operating as normal and discharge into the burn stopped.

"Appropriate measures had been arranged to ensure any impact on the local environment was kept to a minimum. Further investigations confirmed that there were no issues with our infrastructure in the area.

"A clean-up of the area was carried out. We are continuing to liaise with SEPA regarding a review of the incident.”
