Romeo Lavia transfer 'offer prepared' as Liverpool 'move ahead' in £40 million race

Liverpool are said to be 'preparing an opening offer' for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

The 19-year-old signed for the Saints from Manchester City last summer, though could be on the move after one season following his club's relegation from the Premier League. Reports have suggested Southampton will demand in excess of £40million for the teenager, who made 34 appearances in all competitions in 2022/23.

Liverpool have already recruited two midfielders this summer, Alexis Mac Allister the first through the door and yesterday followed by Dominik Szoboszlai. The Reds could yet add to this list, with Lavia continuing to be linked with a move to Anfield.

It seems Jurgen Klopp's side are now pressing ahead with an attempt to bring the youngster to Merseyside, with talkSPORT stating Liverpool are readying a bid for the player. It is added the Reds have 'moved ahead' of Chelsea in the race to recruit Lavia as Mauricio Pochettino, too, seeks reinforcements in this area.

Liverpool said goodbye to three players in this position this summer, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita all leaving the club at the end of last month as free agents. Jude Bellingham was long tipped to be the main man to transform the Reds' midfield, though it emerged in April that a deal for the England international was no longer going to be possible.

Mac Allister, instead, was acquired for £35million and Szoboszlai's £60m transfer was announced yesterday. Liverpool took the decision to trigger this release clause in the contract of the latter, which was set to expire at midnight on June 30.
