Rob Howley has vowed not to waste his second chance with Wales after making an emotional return to the national set-up.
Howley was sent home on the eve of the 2019 Rugby World Cup for betting on rugby, and was later banned for 18 months, with half that sanction suspended.
The 53-year-old returned to Warren Gatland’s Wales staff on Thursday however, taking the role of technical coach.
The ex-Wales and Lions scrum-half took a role with Canada after his ban expired, while Gatland was blocked from bringing him back to his staff a year ago. Now though the former Cardiff and Wasps half-back has been allowed the chance to complete a personal redemption arc.
“I have a second opportunity to do a job I’ve dedicated my working life to and I’m grateful to everyone in Welsh rugby for their acceptance and their faith in me,” said Howley.
“It’s faith I intend to repay to the best of my ability. I have been through an extremely challenging time in my life, speaking out and talking about it has enabled me to move forward.
“I will be more than happy to share my experience with others who might be experiencing tough times and I’m grateful to all of those around me who have supported me through these times.”
Howley explained after his ban was completed that he had struggled with his mental health after the death of his sister.
The grief and trauma contributed to his betting breaches, but he has slowly rebuilt his career and is now back in tandem with Gatland in Wales colours.
“Rob is one of the most successful and experienced Welsh coaches in the international arena at the moment,” said Gatland.
“When we lost Rob from Welsh rugby, we lost a hugely significant amount of intellectual property, knowledge of the game in Wales and of the international scene. I’m delighted to welcome him back into this new role. It is a major coup for Welsh rugby to have secured his services again.”
