River Murray floodwaters turn Moorook home into an island, with thousands of South Australian properties now inundated

A Riverland couple is hoping their 119-year-old home can be saved from rising floodwaters that has turned their property into an island.

The Roos family home at Moorook are just one of 1,100 properties inundated as approximately 190 gigalitres of water flows through the River Murray.

Laurie and Jan Roos have built levees around their Riverland property for weeks, but on Monday one of the levees broke sending water through their driveway and closer to their house.

"We just lost that battle yesterday," Mr Roos said.

"I don't think we'll win against Mother Nature."

Water now surrounds their house, and the only way to get to the property is on a boat.

The 69-year-old said he was "pretty exhausted and defeated" after spending hours trying to keep water out of his home  using sandbags and pumps.

His friends and son have turned up with machinery to help keep the water at bay.

"I thought we were going to be OK, but we're not. The experts can't tell us how much more is coming, nobody seems to know, they are all guessing, like us, we're guessing," Mr Roos said.

"All we can do is hope and pray that it stops coming up."

SES incident controller Stefanie Zakzewski said Renmark has been experiencing peak water levels, which are expected to remain high for several days before they reduce.

"We're seeing some good drop-off rates interstate as the water moves through Mildura," Ms Zakzewski said.

"But as we're coming into South Australia, the river channel looks very different so we're going to have to watch and monitor those peaks."

Peak water levels are expected to arrive at Berri between now and January 2, before moving to Swan Reach and Murray Bridge around the second week of January.

The SES predicts around 4,000 properties will be flooded as flows move down the River Murray.
