Jeremy Hunt is plotting to introduce tax rises that could affect people across the country for years to come, as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak looks to address a black hole of up to £50 billion in the public finances, it is reported.
The Chancellor is set to fill the shortfall through a combination of tax rises and public spending cuts in his Autumn Statement of November 17 - a move that would put pressure on already-squeezed government department budgets.
It is said that Sunak and Hunt yesterday (Monday October 31) agreed to freeze the thresholds at which people start to pay the different rates of income tax and national insurance, The Telegraph reports this morning.
