Rishi Sunak says he will keep calling Bannau Brycheiniog by its English name

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has waded into the debate on the renaming of the Brecon Beacons to Bannau Bycheiniog. The national park recently switched to using its Welsh language name to reflect how it was 'shaped by Welsh people and Welsh culture,' and although a lot of people have supported the change it's received some strongly-worded opposition.

The Prime Minister was the latest to give his opinion in a TV interview quoted by the BBC. He said he imagined "most people" would stick with the English version of the name, adding that he was a "big supporter of the Welsh language and Welsh culture."

Bannau means 'peaks' and Brycheiniog refers to the old kingdom of Wales' fifth-century ruler, Brychan. The 'new' official name reflects the park's long-standing Welsh name, Parc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog.
