Riot Games is giving Arena its biggest evolution yet in League of Legends, introducing a sweeping set of changes in Season 2 that aim to make the mode more dynamic, replayable, and chaotic than ever before.
With the addition of League events, a brand-new augment leveling system, fresh maps, and expanded Guests of Honor with champions like Nocturne and Yone, Arena is being reimagined as a constantly shifting experience rather than a static side mode.
A new era of Arena begins with Events
When Arena first launched, its goal was simple, offer a faster, more experimental alternative to Summoner’s Rift, where players could explore wild builds and unconventional champion pairings. Nearly three years later, Riot is doubling down on that philosophy, but this time with systems designed to keep every match feeling different.
At the center of this update are Events, limited-time gameplay twists that rotate throughout the season. These fundamentally change how matches are structured, replacing the traditional eight teams of two format with new variations.
One of the headline event additions is 3×6, which pits three-player teams against each other across six squads. The mode is designed to unlock greater champion diversity, letting compositions thrive that previously struggled in 2v2 scenarios. It opens the door to more layered strategies, from heavy frontline setups to full teamfight “deathball” comps.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Bravery, a mode built around randomness and adaptability. Champion select is heavily restricted, encouraging players to embrace unpredictable drafts and test their flexibility, similar to ARAM.
Lastly, Swift Arena speeds up the experience, bringing back the traditional four-team two-player structure for quicker, more repeatable matches that reward familiarity and adaptation.
New maps and reworks reshape Arena combat dynamics

Arena’s map pool is also evolving, led by the introduction of Petricite Grove, a new battlefield set on the outskirts of Demacia. The map features tighter terrain and interactive mining bombs that can be knocked into enemies or detonated with crowd control effects, adding a new layer of positional strategy for the players to master.
At the same time, existing maps are being refined. Ancestral Woods has been reworked to reduce snowballing while preserving its identity as a smaller, high-pressure arena. The addition of new terrain and mechanics aims to create more comeback opportunities.
Augment leveling adds a new layer of strategy
One of the biggest additions in Arena Season 2 is the introduction of Augment Levels, a system that fundamentally changes how players build and scale throughout a match.
Instead of simply stacking new augments, players can now upgrade their existing ones, strengthening their effects and, in some cases, unlocking entirely new functionality. For example, augments like Fan the Hammer grow more powerful with each level, firing additional projectiles every time they trigger.
Once players pick up two levelable augments, future augment offerings begin to include the option to level up an existing augment instead of selecting a new one. This creates a meaningful tradeoff between expanding your build and doubling down on a core synergy.
Riot is also making augments more flexible overall. While the cap of four augments largely remains, they will appear more frequently, giving players more opportunities to refine their builds mid-run. From these offerings, players can choose to add a new augment, upgrade an existing one, or replace an augment with a higher-tier option.
That last change is key. Arena will now allow players to swap out augments entirely, addressing one of the mode’s long-standing frustrations, being locked into a weak or mismatched build.
The new Crafting Round, introduced in round eight, pushes this flexibility even further. Players can either gain an additional augment slot or remove one of their current augments to heavily invest in upgrading the rest. The system is designed to reward adaptation, letting players pivot as matches evolve rather than committing to early decisions.
Over 30 new augments shake up the meta

Season 2 also introduces more than 30 new augments, blending returning ideas from ARAM with brand-new mechanics tailored specifically for Arena.
Riot is leaning heavily into the new progression system, with many of these augments scaling dramatically when leveled. Some emphasize snowball potential, while others encourage unconventional or high-risk playstyles.
A few early highlights include:
- Transmute Silver: Lets players instantly fill remaining augment slots with Silver-tier augments, offering a powerful early-game spike and synergy with leveling strategies.
- Wild Fire: Automatically launches bouncing fireballs between enemies, with its effectiveness increasing as it levels up, eventually allowing near-endless chaining.
- Scavenger: Rewards aggressive play by granting augments from defeated opponents, though it limits future choices to upgrades only.
- Magical Girl: Introduces a more whimsical mechanic, spawning a falling star each round that triggers a knockback and transformation effect, followed by a barrage of damage.
Together, these additions expand Arena’s build diversity significantly, especially when combined with augment leveling, making each run feel more distinct and unpredictable.
Guests of Honor expand match variety
Beyond augments, Riot is also expanding the Guests of Honor system, a core feature that injects unique modifiers into each game.
Season 2 brings over 20 new guests, ranging from Demacian champions to demons and Arena-specific personalities. Each one introduces a gameplay twist that can reshape how a match unfolds.
Some examples include:
- Kayle: Grants a protective shield that delays team health loss and rewards survival.
- Fiddlesticks: Adding blessings and curses to augment choices.
- Yone: Allows teams to align with Demons or Demon Hunters.
- Ornn: Unlocks a rotating prismatic item shop.
- Nocturne: Creates zones of darkness that obscure vision.
To ensure players experience the new additions, older Guests of Honor have been temporarily disabled, though Riot confirmed they will return in future rotations.
