Ringo Starr has appeared to confirm that Barry Keoghan will play him in Sam Mendes’ upcoming four-part Beatles biopic.
Rumours had been swirling that the Irish actor, 32, was set to portray him on screen and now word has come from the horse’s mouth.
Asked during an interview about the possibility of the Saltburn star playing him, Starr was full of praise for him.
“I think he’s great,” he told Entertainment Tonight. Adding: “I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons and I hope not too many.”
It was first announced in February that Mendes would be directing four separate films about The Beatles with each flick following one specific band member’s point of view.
Their story will be told from their beginnings in Liverpool through Beatlemania in the 1960s and their enduring legacy.
Speaking about the project at the time, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, whose career includes work on the London stage as well as hit films such as American Beauty and Skyfall, said: “I’m honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitiutes a trip to the movies.”
While no official casting announcements have as yet been made, other names rumoured to be involved include Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.
Dickinson played coy when asked directly by Dazed.
“There’s nothing I can say about that; it might not be true, it might be, I don’t know... there’s a speculation culture,” he told the publication.
Production is expected to begin mid-2025 with the films slated to hit the big screen in 2027.
