Richard Madeley returns to GMB and details 'freak accident' that led to hospital dash

Richard Madeley has returned to Good Morning Britain after a break saw him replaced by Ed Balls. The presenter has been missing from the ITV1 show, which he often hosts alongside Susanna Reid, for two weeks.

The 66-year-old returned on Monday, March 6 and explained his absence on the programme was due to a "freak accident" that led to an operation. Richard remained off screens while he recovered.

Welcoming Richard back to the show, Susanna said: "You appear to have made a full recovery." Explaining his absence, the presenter said: "I had a freak accident, basically I was crouching down on a slope between my open car door, and I was just fiddling around with something at the bottom of the car door.

"I turned around as the door decided to close itself, and gravity pulled it shut, it's a big heavy door and it hit me on the chin and I just really bit my tongue."

"To the extent that I needed stitches," Richard added, as Susanna shuddered at the thought. "I needed an operation, I had to have some stitches in it. So the reason I wasn't here was because of this."

"That's horrible," Susanna said, to which Richard replied: "It wasn't pleasant actually, and eating and drinking was difficult."

"And you actually had to have an operation to stitch it back together?" Susanna asked. "Two stitches at the top and one at the side yes," Richard responded.

"I don't know why I'm asking because there's something about tongues," Susanna said pulling a face. "Yes, let's not go into any more detail you don't want to hear. I'm fine now."

Susanna then explained that Richard sounded "word perfect" so his recovery must have been very swift and effective. "It took two weeks, I had to cancel two weeks of being on here which is really annoying," Richard said.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am. For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
