Rhod Gilbert reveals he's undergoing cancer treatment as he issues statement

Rhod Gilbert has issued a statement revealing that he's receiving treatment at Velindre Cancer Centre. The comedian is patron of the Cardiff-based charity and, in the past, he's led treks around the world to help raise vital funds for the centre.

In a message posted on his official Facebook page on Thursday, July 14 he says: "As a proud patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, I’ve trekked the world, hosted chaotic quizzes and star-studded comedy nights. I’ve met and made friends with so many inspirational staff, patients and their families. It has been a huge part of my life for the last ten years.

"So while I never imagined that I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands. The NHS care I’m receiving is incredible. I wouldn't wish this on anyone...but who knows, maybe I'll come out the other end with a new stand-up show and a 40 minute rant about orange squash. Thank you everyone for your support over the last few weeks and months (and years). I’ll be disappearing for a while and won’t be commenting further, at least not for now, whilst I focus on my recovery."

Rhod was flooded with messages of support. Wayne Griffiths said: "You will get through this especially with the help and guidance of the inspirational workforce at Velindre Cancer Centre… keep strong …"

Rebecca Quick said: "Wishing you a speedy recovery Rhod. Sending love and hugs from Cornwall. Very much looking forward to seeing you back up on the stage."

Anita Jarvis posted: "Sending very best wishes for a speedy recovery. Take care and we look forward to your next show when you are ready."

"Bless you Rhod, be kind to yourself as you fight the good fight and come out the other end - fit and well. Sending healing hugs," added Dawn Symcox.

And Sue Youngman added: "Wishing you all the very best. Velindre is a very special place and the care is second to none, you couldn’t be in better hands. Looking forward to seeing you back in action."

Rhod has worked tirelessly for Velindre over the years, putting on fundraising shows and leading supporters on challenging treks across the globe, including to Patagonia, Machu Picu and Kilimanjaro.
