Returning striker Dayle Robertson "instrumental" as Jeanfield Swifts defeat Broxburn to remain top of Premier Division

He may not have penned his name on the scoresheet.

But Jeanfield striker Dayle Robertson received plenty of plaudits for his important role in Saturday’s 2-0 home win against Broxburn Athletic.

Robertson, recently back from injury, teed-up Chris McLeish for the opener in the 80th minute and then played his part in helping Connor McLaren double the lead.

Manager Ross Gunnion said: “The conditions were tough to play in for both teams but I felt we were the better team over the 90 minutes.

“We created a few good openings in the first half but maybe just lacked a little composure at times.

“The second half we were much more patient and eventually got the openings that provided the goals for us. The platform that gives us that opportunity, however, is the fact we limited Broxburn to very few chances and looked solid as a defensive unit all over the park.

“I mentioned at half time that if we work to get openings we have players like Chris McLeish and Connor McLaren who are clinical in front of goal. Both have been outstanding so far in the four games we’ve played.

“But they’ll both acknowledge the difference that Dayle Robertson made to the game - he was instrumental in both goals.”

Swifts’ win moves their Premier Division record to four victories from four and that has them sitting proudly at the top of the standings.

The opening to the campaign has been just what the doctor ordered but, of course, Gunnion was quick to point out that there is long, long way to go.

“It’s always nice to be sitting top of the table but we’re well aware how early in the season it is,” Gunnion said.

“But the players have shown a fantastic attitude in the first four games and ground out some excellent results.

“We get a break from league duty for a couple of weeks now but if anything we’ll be looking to raise the standards in training as I still think there is more to come in an attacking sense from the players.”
