A Federal Reserve Board employee set off 279 data alerts over the three months before retirement in July 2024, the central bank's watchdog found. The busiest day, 19 June 2024, produced 192. Three days later, the employee left on a personal trip to a country the Board rates 'restricted', the highest travel risk grade.
Every alert came from data loss prevention software, which warns staff moving sensitive records. Of those alerts, 111 involved possible papers from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which sets US interest rates. Flagged file names pointed to forecasts and economic data. The Board's Office of Inspector General says possibly sensitive information remains unaccounted for.
