'Rest easy, chiefs': Two Pennsylvania firefighters killed in crash while on duty

Two firefighters were killed in a head-on crash in Pennsylvania on Monday while searching for a missing woman, officials said.

Fire Chief Jeff Buck and Assistant Fire Chief Robert Shick Jr of the Walnuttown Fire Company were travelling north in a utility vehicle along Route 222 on Saturday around 6 pm when they were struck by a southbound Toyota Camry, according to the Berks County Coroner.

Local media reported that the utility vehicle was on the shoulder when the Camry swerved off the road and hit it. A man and a woman inside the car fled the scene but were later arrested, police said.

The crash occurred about 45 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Both victims were residents of Fleetwood, and autopsies are scheduled for Monday.

"Our thoughts and prayers" go out to the families, the Walnuttown Fire Company said in a Facebook post. "Rest easy chiefs, we got it from here."

Authorities have not released further details about the arrests or the search for the missing woman.
