What Resource Guarding Actually Is
The growl is not a personality flaw. Resource guarding is a hardwired survival behaviour observed across virtually every social carnivore species: an animal signals that it is unwilling to give up something it values. In domestic dogs, the trigger is usually food, but high-value chews, toys, resting spots, and even a favoured human can prompt the same response. The behaviour sits on a spectrum, a stiffened body and a hard stare at one end, a snap or bite at the other, and most dogs guard occasionally without ever escalating. The problem is not the instinct. The problem is the response it tends to provoke in people.
