After a Derrick Henry trade rumor surfaced on Monday, a new report is now saying the Tennessee Titans are not shopping the superstar running back.
According to Bally Sports’ Michael Silver, who cited current general managers as his source of the information, the Titans were shopping Henry for a trade while down at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this past week.
According to my sources — all of them current general managers — Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Arizona Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins are among the players who’ve been shopped in recent days.
However, per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, he’s hearing from his sources that the Titans are not shopping Henry.
I know there’s talk that the Titansare shopping running back Derrick Henry but my sources tell me they are not. I had been told general manager Ran Carthon would be “methodical” in his approach to free agency and changes to the team. The releases of tackle Taylor Lewan and receiver Robert Woods weren’t surprising, and cutting loose edge rusher Bud Dupree also makes sense. I don’t believe the Titans see any tangible free-agent upgrade at quarterback over Ryan Tannehill, and taking away the most essential part of the offense in Henry would indicate Tennessee is tanking more than anything. The Titans can very much contend in the AFC South, and they’ll have to do that with Henry.
While I’ll never get on a reporter for not revealing his sources, Jones did not cite where he got this information from like Silver did, which, in my mind, lends a bit more credence to the latter’s report.
We still don’t know exactly what the Titans’ approach will be this offseason, as the team could either rebuild or simply retool.
But if they do decide to blow it up and do a full rebuild, trading Henry makes sense. On the other hand, if the plan is to retool and really try to compete in 2023, Henry won’t be going anywhere.
