The Houston Texans have identified who they want leading the quarterbacks room under rookie coach DeMeco Ryans.
According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans have hired Minnesota Vikings assistant quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson as their new quarterbacks coach, replacing the duo of offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton and offensive assistant Ted White.
The Texans previously interviewed Johnson for what was presumably the club’s offensive coordinator position under Ryans.
Johnson and Ryans have history working together under Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers. In 2017, Shanahan’s first year, Johnson was on the team as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity coaching fellowship. That was also the same season that DeMeco Ryans started out as the 49ers’ defensive quality control coach.
Johnson had the same fellowship with the 2019 Indianapolis Colts under Frank Reich. From 2020-21 Johnson was the Colts’ offensive quality control coach. In 2022, he became the assistant quarterbacks coach on rookie coach Kevin O’Connell’s staff.
