Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez is reportedly finalizing a 12-year deal with the team, sources told MLB’s Jesse Sanchez on Friday.
The deal’s specific details have not been officially released. However, according to reports, the 21-year-old is guaranteed $210 million over 12 years, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Rodríguez will make $105 million over the first seven years, with a $15 million signing bonus. The rest of the guarantees come with a player option for five years and $90 million.
The deal also reportedly includes team options. If the Mariners pick up the team option, which could be for eight or 10 years on top of the base deal, it will be worth at least $320 million with additional escalators based on whether he wins the MVP award and how high he finishes in voting. One MVP win or three top five finishes would reportedly push the number to $280 million, while two MVPs or four top five finishes increases the club option price to $350 million, per Rosenthal.
At $210 million guaranteed, the rookie’s reported contract would become the 17th-highest in MLB as of right now. However, he stands to earn far more than that based on the maximum value of the deal. Passan calls the “likeliest outcome” that Rodríguez makes at least $320 million through 2037.
According to Rosenthal, the deal also features a full no-trade clause for Rodríguez.
Rodríguez is currently playing on his rookie contract and earns a base salary of $700,000 in 2022. Now, his average salary will be at least $15 million per year, according to the reports.
In just his first year in MLB, Rodríguez has put on a show for baseball fans. He earned All-Star honors this year, and was runner-up to Juan Soto at the Home Run Derby. The Mariners star finished the derby with 81 home runs.
In 108 games this season, Rodríguez is hitting .269/.328/.471 with 20 home runs, 64 RBIs and 64 runs scored.
