Report: Dolphins Will Pick Up Tua Tagovailoa’s Fifth-Year Option

The Dolphins have told quarterback Tua Tagovailoa that they plan to pick up his fifth-year option, keeping the former first-round pick under contract in Miami for at least another season, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Friday

Tagovailoa, who is set to enter the fourth-year of his rookie deal in 2023, will now be guaranteed to earn $23.2 million during the ‘24 season.

The No. 5 pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Tagovailoa has taken major strides during his time in Miami, especially last season. During the 2022 campaign, the former Alabama star completed 64.8% of his passes for 3,548 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He went 8–5 as a starter in 13 appearances.

However, Tagovailoa’s year was somewhat sidetracked by injuries, including multiple concussions. The quarterback’s long-term health has been a lingering question as the offseason begins, as some wondered if the Dolphins would explore other options at the position for 2023.

Friday’s move, however, suggests that Miami is content to move forward with Tagovailoa for at least an additional season and possibly beyond should he maintain his high level of performance on the field.
