The Eagles successfully started the 2022 season as winners, coming away with a 38-35 road victory against the Detroit Lions in front of a sold-out crowd at Ford Field.
Philadelphia is now 10-2 in Week 1 games since the 2010 season, making the Monday night showdown against the Vikings in Week 2 even more exciting.
Jalen Hurts totaled almost 350 yards of offense on a day when he was pressured off the edge and unable to develop a rhythm within any pass catchers outside of A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert.
On defense, the Eagles were gashed on the ground and unable to rekindle the 2021 pressure on Jared Goff, failing to sack the Lions quarterback.
With focus turning to the Vikings, here are the grades for Week 1.
Offense -- B+
Philadelphia amassed 455 total yards and 216-rushing yards against an improved Lions defense.
The Eagles converted 9 of their first 13 third downs and 10 of 17 overall.
The Eagles did not turn the football over.
QB -- B+
Hurts ran for 90 yards, threw for 243 – totaling 342 yards of offense, and played under control.
The inability to get anyone outside of A.J. Brown involved in the passing game was troubling, but it’s only Week 1.
RB -- A+
This group constantly spreads wealth around.
Miles Sanders ran for 96 yards on 13 carries, all three backs scored touchdowns, and the Eagles rang up 216 ground yards on 39 carries.
WR -- B
A.J. Brown was spectacular, logging 10-catches for 155-yards.
The rest was unsettling as DeVonta Smith was targeted four times and had a reception wiped away because of a penalty, while Quez Watkins wasn’t targeted at all.
TE --B
Goedert had three catches for 60-yards on four targets, while Jack Stoll and Noah Togiai were used as blockers and decoys.
OL -- B+
The Eagles top-ranked offensive line allowed a combined six hurries and one sack while clearing the way for 216 rushing yards.
There were breakdowns upfront, and Hurts was pressured on several throws, preventing a perfect performance.
Defense -- D
D’Andre Swift had 144-yards rushing and broke six tackles to earn an 80.0-plus rushing grade from PFF.
Jared Goff was rarely pressured, and the Eagles’ defense allowed 35 points.
DL -- C
Philadelphia had no outside pass rush, but the young trio of defensive tackles – Milton Williams, Marlon Tuipulotu, and first-round draft pick Jordan Davis were impactful during their limited snaps.
LB -- C+
T.J. Edwards had seven tackles and one pass defended, while Kyzir White had a solid debut, logging five tackles, one for loss and one for defense.
White also played a huge role in James Bradberry’s pick-six off Jared Goff. Star SAM linebacker Haasan Reddick had two total tackles, one for loss and some pressure on the quarterback.
Nakobe Dean logged three total snaps, and he continues to learn the system.
DB -- B
Marcus Epps shined with a team-high ten tackles and one tackle for loss.
New Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson ended up starting the game and played the most snaps, as Philadelphia’s pass defense was solid outside the Chark contest catch over Darius Slay.
