The Denver Broncos have scheduled an in-person interview with former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, and they might just be the favorite to land the Super Bowl-winning coach.
“The Broncos appear to be the front-runner for Sean Payton, at least in the early stages of the process,” Mark Maske of The Washington Post tweeted on Thursday evening. “Payton likes the franchise’s stable ownership and would be happy to work with Russell Wilson, source says.”
Wilson has spoken glowingly about Payton, calling him “one of the world’s best.” Payton has also talked about the possibility of working with Wilson, saying in an October interview with Colin Cowherd that he could help correct the QB’s flaws and bring out his strengths.
Because the coach is still under contract with New Orleans, the Broncos would have to compensate the Saints if they hire Payton. NFL Network reported last week that New Orleans wants a first-round pick “and more” for Payton. Denver is aware of that and is “still in the game” for the coach, according to Ian Rapoport.
The Broncos have already completed four head coach interviews and plan to hold at least four more.
