Report: Bears interviewing Giants’ Thomas McGaughey for special teams coordinator

The Chicago Bears have their new head coach in Matt Eberflus, and now he’s working on assembling his coaching staff.

According to FanSided’s Matt Lombardo, the Bears are interviewing New York Giants assistant Thomas McGaughey for their special teams coordinator position.

The Giants weren’t a good football team last season. Yet, New York’s special teams unit ranked 10th under McGaughey. It’s pretty impressive considering there wasn’t a lot of depth on the Giants roster.

McGaughey has served as a special teams coach for 19 years at the NFL and collegiate levels. He’s already garnered interest around the NFL, as he’s interviewed with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers this offseason.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported that Eberflus is zeroing in on Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia for special teams coordinator. So it’s definitely something to monitor.

Eberflus’ most important hire will be offensive coordinator, as developing Justin Fields is of high importance. Packers quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Luke Getsy has reportedly been offered the Bears’ offensive coordinator position. Chicago has also interviewed Texans quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton and Jaguars wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal for offensive coordinator.

Eberflus is also bringing cornerbacks coach James Rowe and linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi with him from the Colts.
