Recently, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a member of the far-left 'Squad,' attended a fundraiser co-hosted by Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Awad, known for his controversial and antisemitic remarks, expressed happiness over the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israeli civilians, causing the deaths of nearly 1,200 individuals, including women and babies.
During the 16th annual Convention for Palestine, Awad stated his support for the people of Gaza breaking the siege and claimed that Israel does not have the right to self-defense as an occupying power. These comments led to the Biden administration distancing itself from CAIR and condemning Awad's statements as antisemitic and abhorrent.
Despite the backlash, Awad praised Bowman as a 'staunch defender of Palestinian rights' on social media ahead of the fundraiser. The event took place at a private residence in Fairfax, Virginia, with Bowman in attendance. However, Bowman's campaign did not provide a comment on his decision to participate in the fundraiser alongside Awad.
Bowman, who represents New York's 16th Congressional District, is currently facing a tough primary challenge from George Latimer, the Westchester County executive. The primary election is scheduled for June 25, with the winner likely becoming the next district representative, as analysts rate the race as either 'safe' or 'solid' Democrat.
As the primary approaches, the fundraiser attendance raises questions about Bowman's associations and the potential impact on his campaign. The controversy surrounding Awad's remarks and CAIR's connection to the event may influence voter perceptions in the district.
