Reo Hatate gives Saudi short shrift as Celtic hero makes clear what he really wants amid Middle East interest

In-demand Celtic star Reo Hatate has moved to cool speculation he could be tempted with a move to a cash-rich Saudi club.

However, the midfielder admits he holds a dream of playing in the English Premier League as he looks to the Champions League next term with Celtic. The Japan international has been linked with a move south of the border with reports suggesting that Ange Postecoglou is keen for a reunion at Tottenham - while speculation that he could follow Jota to the Middle East also gathering pace.

Hatate is understood to be focused on Celtic with a view to making his name in Europe. But Saudi sides – including Al-Ittihad – remain interest and are preparing to offer huge financial packages. Celtic won’t want to let go of another key player unless it’s a blockbuster bid after the Portuguese star made his way to the Gulf State in a bumper £25million deal. It comes after his agent moved to cool talk of a move to Saudi last week.

Hatate was put on the spot about his future targets amid speculation that a move to the SPL could be on the cards. Asked where he wants to play by DAZN, Saudi appeared to be ruled out as he responded: "At a high level such as the Premier League. It's a once-in-a-lifetime stage, so if I can play, I'd like to take on the challenge. But right now, the top priority is to do what I need to do in the team I'm in, so I'd like to do my best."

He was also quizzed on his debut in the Champions League last term. He added: "Before playing in the Champions League, it was a stage I longed for. But now I want to compete there again. I think it was a good experience."
