REM-FIT 600 LUX ELITE MATTRESS REVIEW: UNBOXING AND SET-UP
The REM-Fit 600 Lux Elite mattress was delivered in what looked like a bright blue plastic tube – you’d never have guessed there was a mattress inside it. I hauled it upstairs to my bedroom, took out a pair of scissors and slit it down the side. The beast was unleashed.
For a long while, there was a hissing noise as the mattress, still in another plastic sheet, gradually ‘inflated’. A nifty little cutting implement was included in the packing so I lugged the mattress onto the bed frame and slit it in a couple of places to fully release it. As if by magic – but more because I’d measured correctly – the mattress soon exactly filled the space I’d reserved for it (a place previously taken by a mattress I’d had for 18 years – I know, I’m sorry).
Thanks to the escaping gas that had compressed the mattress, the room soon had a gassy smell, and that lingered for a day or so. You can, of course, open the window, but it was still a bit nippy on the day it was delivered. I now had a ‘live’ mattress, though, and after a few hours - to let it ‘relax’ - I put a couple of under sheets on it, a duvet and pillows.
REM-FIT 600 LUX ELITE MATTRESS REVIEW: DESIGN
REM-Fit’s memory foam is, they claim, proven to wick moisture and dissipate heat away from your body, keeping you at just the right temperature all night long.
The REM-Fit 600 is rated at 7.5 (medium-firm), and boasts hybrid construction, meaning that there are dual layered independent pocket springs and an open-cell memory foam layer. The secondary comfort layer promises to keep your bed flat over time, while upgraded zoned support should relieve any pressure point build-up. Four thousand premium pocket springs offer ‘luxury support’.
Besides this, there are high density foam walls, so no danger of roll-off, and it’s good that the cover is removable and washable: it’s all very well changing and washing your sheets regularly, but absolute bed cleanliness is impossible, so this should ensure the mattress’s freshness for longer. ‘Motion isolation’ pledges to keep you sleeping soundly all night. So would I do so in the coming weeks?
REM-FIT 600 LUX ELITE MATTRESS REVIEW: PERFORMANCE
The REM-Fit 600 Lux Elite mattress was softer but harder, in that its top layer is softer and more luxurious feeling than I’d had before, but I could feel that beneath that there was more solidity, and a sense of real quality.
My first night on the Lux Elite was pleasant and comfortable - what I enjoyed most was the sensation of sinking down into it, but only a short way. Not that I got an unbroken night’s sleep – my brain was, as ever, thinking about many things, including what I’d write in this review! My rarely-at-rest brain is actually one of the reasons I wanted a new mattress – to see whether it could soothe me somewhat and get me more peaceful nights.
I was soon sleeping better on this bed than I was on my last. While my sleep may always be adversely affected by my foolish actions like looking at my phone too much, having that extra glass of wine and worrying about the state of the nation, it was definitely improved by the REM-Fit 600 mattress (I may still lie awake in the middle of the night but I’m more comfortable when I am!).
The mattress was delivered to me mid-May and the testing period was over a few weeks until early June. So this meant I began sleeping on it as the weather was improving when we finally emerged from what felt like our eight-month winter. I kept my medium tog quilt on and wondered if the mattress would regulate my temperature as promised on the REM-Fit website; in this respect, it seemed pretty good. I was usually the ‘right’ temperature, neither too cold nor too hot, no matter what I wore to bed.
On night seven of my time with the REM-Fit 600 I didn’t have a great night’s sleep despite having had a fairly quiet evening that concluded with a hot bath. On the phone that evening my mum had said that it takes a bit of time to get used to a new mattress, and I think she’s right.
Things seemed to improve after that. I had several good nights in a row – or, at least, I didn’t have any really bad nights. Make no mistake, this is a mattress that eases you into dreamland and accommodates your limbs being flung to any corner of the bed; restless sleepers look no further.
REM-FIT 600 LUX ELITE MATTRESS REVIEW: VERDICT
The REM-Fit 600 Lux Elite mattress is a quality product. It feels good to sink into - but not sink too much into - and I imagine it’ll feel great for many years to come. Perhaps not 18 years again, that might be pushing it. You feel like you’re ‘in good hands’ when you’re on it. It might not quite give me sweet dreams – I’m not sure that’s possible! – but it’s not far off. Its hybrid construction makes for a solidly impressive product and, what’s more, you look forward to going to sleep on it at the end of each day.
