More than half a dozen petitions claiming that mandatory vaccination policies violate religious freedom have been filed with the Supreme Court since May, according to data that James G. Hodge Jr., director of Arizona State University's Center for Public Health Law and Policy, shared with CIDRAP News. The steady stream of filings suggests the justices may soon confront the question directly, even though their latest order settled very little.
That order, issued Sept. 8, denied a New York mother's emergency request to enroll her unvaccinated kindergartner without an opinion. Justices Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch said they would have granted it.
