Renfrew coach Ryan Borris believes the club’s players deserve great credit for putting last season’s disappointment behind them and starting the new campaign with a bang.
The New Western Park side have won all five of their Second Division clashes so far, thumping Forth Wanderers on Saturday thanks to first half efforts from forwards Dom Innes, Ciaran Diver and David McKenna.
‘Frew were gutted to miss out on promotion last season, with the club narrowly edged out both through their Conference position and as the best placed runner-up across the WoSFL if Darvel had beaten Tranent in the Lowland League play-off.
But Borris has hailed his players’ fighting spirit after returning from the summer break with the right attitude as they look to seal the league title this season.
He told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “We’ve had a great start to the season winning every game and the boys attitude has been spot on.
“If last season had gone on two or three more games I think we would have made it. We had a brilliant end to the season but just didn’t have enough time to make up the difference.
“We were all on holiday in Benidorm when Darvel were playing Tranent and we knew we’d be up if Darvel had won that as well, but it just wasn’t to be.
“It would have been easy for the lads to have felt down from it all but there’s been no hangover.
“The boys have been right at it from day one of pre-season.
“We came back in June and they’ve been working ever so hard.
“The commitment is there to play for the jersey and they deserve a lot of credit. We could have all been sat feeling sorry for ourselves but instead we’re determined to kick on.”
While it has been the perfect start to the campaign for Renfrew, Borris insists his side won’t be getting too far ahead of themselves with plenty of football still to be played this season.
Borris said: “It’s a great start but it’s just that, a start.
“As a management team and a group of players, we need to keep doing what we’ve been doing to this point and not drop our intensity at all.
“It’s imperative we keep working hard as we’re only in September.
“It’s time to kick on now because we know from last season how important it is to get points on the board and not be chasing wins come the end of the season.”
