BALTIMORE _ It's not a common injury caused by a hit-by-pitch, but then again it's been an uncommon season for the Yankees when it comes to injuries.
The Yankees pulled the plug on Giancarlo Stanton's rehab assignment Wednesday, announcing the outfielder was dealing with "left calf tightness." He'll be shut down 7-10 days.
"He has a minor strain in the calf," Aaron Boone said. "He kind of thinks it's still a result of that pitch he got hit (by). He obviously got through the game the other day, but there's a little bit of soreness in there."
Stanton, on the IL since April 1 with a left biceps strain and a mysterious shoulder issue that required a cortisone injection in late April, was hit by a pitch during a simulated game on Friday. He went 1 for 3 with a homer Monday in his first rehab assignment game with High-A Tampa but did not play Tuesday as scheduled because of soreness in the calf.
"It's hard to pin down exactly when it happened," Boone said. "Talking to G, he feels like it's a result of that because of where he got hit on the knee/calf (area). Not sure exactly but that's his feeling on what happened."
